Ukraine-Russia war latest: Trump’s peace envoy calls Putin a ‘humanitarian’ hours after his forces kill two pensioners

What the coverage shows

Most outlets center on Steve Witkoff’s meeting with Vladimir Putin and the release of detained American Stephen Hubbard, with Reuters, NBC News, CNN, AP, BBC News and others pairing the prisoner release with the envoy’s praise of Putin as a “humanitarian.” A second strand appears in Axios, SCMP, Al Jazeera and AP, which stress the talks angle and the possibility of resumed peace negotiations. The Guardian, Channel 4, CBS and The Independent foreground the “humanitarian” wording more sharply, while CBS and the Independent add explicit criticism or reaction to it.
