Brendan Nugent’s family say Helen Haines has been their friend for more than 20 years

What the coverage shows

Both outlets frame the story around the family’s statement that Helen Haines has been known to them for more than 20 years, with The Guardian US leading on Brendan Nugent’s family saying she has been their friend and The Independent calling her a long-time family friend. The Guardian US alone also foregrounds the father’s description of the incident as “devastating and unfathomable” and the allegation of an attack on the independent MP.
